Welcome to the Website of the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers

This page will be updated on a daily basis, to provide a convenient news service to scarce & rare birds found within the County Nottinghamshire.

The Sightings page and @Nottsbirders Twitter feed are intended to alert birders to scarcer species that they might be interested in seeing within the County.

Records of more common species are still very important, but should preferably be submitted to the county Recorder Keith Rainford Bullfinch194@gmail.com These records will then be added to the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers data-base, to be included in the monthly Newsletter and Annual Reports.

None of these reports have been verified or checked by the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers' Records Committee.

Species shown in bold Purple on this page are BBRC rarities or species recorded on less than ten occasions in the county. Bold Blue are rare and scarce county birds recorded less than annually that require a description or supporting details for the society’s archive. A full list of these species can be found on the Recording page. Red are species of interest. Bold GREY are unconfirmed sightings or a species of unknown origin.

During this period of lockdown restrictions for Corvid-19, it has been decided to once again revert back to weekly updates to discourage social gatherings.

Weekly updates will be put out each Sunday evening and will continue until government restrictions are lifted.

Misterton Carr - 2 Russian White-fronted Geese [in fields with 415 Pink-footed Geese] also 11 Whooper Swans.

Collingham Pits - 3 Smew [all redheads on Ferry Lane Lake], also Great White Egret.

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Smew [redhead still on Neatholme Fen], 50 Pink Footed Geese [north west over Chainbridge Scrape].

Clumber Park - 11 Hawfinch [in trees near chapel].

Hoveringham - 5 Whooper Swan [on Railway Pit].

Beeston - 2 Sand Martin [still over canal].

Budby Common - 4 Woodlark.

Saturday 27th February

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Smew [redhead still on Neatholme Fen].

Beeston - 2 Sand Martin [over canal south of Meadow Lane].

Harworth Pit Top - 2 Jack Snipe.

Rufford Pit Top - 2 Wood Lark [13:30].

Friday 26th February

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Smew [redhead still on Neatholme Fen, also 23 Shelduck, 12 Goldeneye, 2 Snipe and a Kingfisher], 7 Pintail, 12 Goldeneye, 8 Goosander [Chainbrige Pit], Great White Egret [at least 3 still on site].

Clumber Park - 2 Lesser Spotted Woodpecker [pair at 14:00].

Kings Mill Reservoir - Ring-necked Parakeet, Water Rail, 2 Common Snipe, Grey Wagtail.

Idle Washlands - 54 Whooper Swans [Slaynes Lane].

Wednesday 24th February

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Smew [redhead still on Neatholme Fen] also Curlew, 8 Pintail.

Skegby - single Raven, 6 Yellowhammer, 10 Skylark.

Tuesday 23rd February

Gamston - Merlin [over fields east of the A638 between Gamston and Eaton 16:50].

Monday 22nd February

Annesley Pit Top - Dunlin [single on main lagoon].

Sunday 21st February

Headon - WAXWING [one observed for ten minutes in a private garden before flying off].

North Muskham - Smew [one at lake this morning].

Newark on Trent - Smew [three redheads flew north along River Trent 10:50].

Clumber Park - 4 Hawfinch [still in trees near chapel].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Chiffchaff [Neatholme Lane this afternoon], Marsh Harrier, 2 Great White Egret, 8 Ruff, 40 Golden Plover,  2 Dunlin [flooded fields on Clayworth Common].

Saturday 20th February

Gringley Carr - HEN HARRIER [male showed for several minutes at 16:00], also 16 Tree Sparrow, 9 Brambling.

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - BITTERN [still on Chainbridge Scrape], Smew [redhead still on Neatholme Fen, also 16 Ruff], 250 Golden Plover [in flooded field north of The Willows], 5 Whooper Swans [Clayworth Common].

Mattersey - 7 Whooper Swans [on floods along Eel Pool Road].

Friday 19th February

Collingham Pits - Smew [redhead on Ferry Lane Lake 13:10].

Harworth - 2 Woodlark [on colliery grounds behind Aldi 09:16].

Rufford CP - 9 Hawfinch [in trees opposite main car park].

Thursday 18th February

Mapperley Park - 2 Raven [circling over Lucknow Drive15:00].

Wednesday 17th February

Attenborough NR - CASPIAN GULL [sub-adult again flew south-west over sailing club].

Wollaton - Mealy Redpoll [at least one again in private garden with c 20 Lesser Redpolls].

Holme Pierrepont - 3 Smew [drake and 2 redheads A52 pit], Redshank [Blotts Pit].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Smew [redhead still on Neatholme Fen].

Worksop Canch - 2 Mandarin [both drakes on the River Ryton].

Rufford CP - 6 Hawfinch [still by the Ice House 13:15].

Tuesday 16th February

Besthorpe NWT - 11 Russian White-fronted Goose, adult Mediterranean Gull].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Smew [redhead still on Neatholme Fen].

Monday 15th February

Girton Pits - 10 Russian White-fronted Goose [6 adults and 4 imm with Greylag Geese in sheep fields north of Sailing Lake, 12:05].

Babworth - Lesser Spotted Woodpecker

Besthorpe NWT - Smew [redhead on Mons Pool, 14:00].

Rufford CP - 8 Hawfinch [still in tree by Ice House, 11:00].

Hickling - Mandarin [with Mallards on the Grantham Canal].

Sunday 14th February

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 1 Great White Egret , 2 Shelduck [Conories].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Smew [redhead and 2 Dunlin Chainbridge Pit ]. 50+ Siskin, 1 Nuthatch [Linghurst Wood], Jack Snipe [ flushed from near Neatholme Pit], Peregrine and female Merlin [Clayworth Common], Great White Egret [at least 3 still around the site].

Saturday 13th February

Idle Washlands - 81 Whooper Swans, 2 Pintail [Slaynes Lane], 7 Ruff, 4 Common Snipe, 4 Redshank [Hagg Lane Flash].

Kilvington - 18 Whooper Swans [West Lake].

Wollaton Hall - 8 Whooper Swans [Wollaton Hall Lake].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - 2 Dunlin [Chainbridge Pit again this morning].

Friday 12th February

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - 70 Stock Dove [Clayworth Common 09:40], Smew [redhead on Chainbridge Pit again this evening, also 2 Dunlin], MEDITERRANEAN GULL [adult again in Neatholme Scrape roost 16:56].

Gringley Carr - 100 Golden Plover, 3 Brambling, Corn Bunting, c50 Yellowhammer, c100 Chaffinch.

Blidworth Woods - 15+ Common Crossbill [09:00].

Thursday 11th February

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Merlin [female with prey on Clayworth Common 11:30], Smew [redhead on Chainbridge Pit this afternoon, also 2 Dunlin, 1 Ruff]. MEDITERRANEAN GULL [adult in Neatholme Scrape roost, also 1w leucistic Common Gull], 42 Goosander [Ski Pit].

Gringley Carr - 161 Golden Plover, Green Sandpiper, 2 Barn Owl, 67 Fieldfare, 4 Stonechat, 2 Tree Sparrow, 4 Brambling, 153 Linnet, 11 Yellowhammer, 27 Reed Bunting [along Carr Road].

Kilvington - 19 Whooper Swans [East Lake].

Ratcliffe on Soar - 2 Stonechat [pair at Redhill Marina].

Stoke Bardolph - Ruddy Shelduck [one on the Shelford bank of the Trent from at 14:50].

Church Laneham - KNOT [on floods by the River Trent 1km north of the village 16:30].

Kirklington 5 Goosander [2 male 3 female, Broad Berry's Lake].

Bestwood Village - 40+ Yellowhammer [Westhouse farm, 12:00], 2 Sonechat [Kilarney Park/Lamins Lane 13:00].

Sunday 7th February

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - BAR-TAILED GODWIT, redhead Smew [Chainbridge Pit 12:00], HEN HARRIER [ringtail over fields behind Walters Farm before heading over river towards Tiln Village and lost to view 10-45], 18 Ruff, 16 Golden Plover, 820 Lapwing [Clayworth Common, north of the Willows 09:00], 18 Red-crested Pochard [Linghurst Lakes], 3 Great White Egret [around the site].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - WOOD SANDPIPER [on flooded field north of willows 11:50], KNOT [flew north from Tiln North 09:39], also 1 Redshank.

Idle Washlands - 3 BEWICK'S SWAN [two adults still at Slaynes Lane].

Serlby - 2 Grey Partridge [Bishopfield Farm].

Monday 1st February

Hoveringham - Great Northern Diver [juvenile still on Railway Pit], Stonechat [in set aside at the edge of village].

Plumtree - Red Kite [circled over the church 11:00].

Annesley Pit Top - Black tailed Godwit [this afternoon].

Nottingham University Park - Ruddy Shelduck [on the lake 15:30].

Bestwood - 2 Brambling, 1 Tree Sparrow, 150 Linnet [on wild-bird food crop adjacent to first pigfield 14:40], 15 Yellowhammer [Broad Valley Farm 15:30].
